Accounting for

sole traders.

Built around Making Tax Digital. From £29/month, software included.

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 file four quarterly updates plus a final declaration — five HMRC submissions a year instead of one. We make that disappear. Your accounts, your returns, your MTD filings — handled by our expert team, powered by Joy Pilot.

A sole trader is one of the simplest ways to run a business. Joy Pilot filed the UK’s first live MTD VAT return in June 2018 — Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is what it was built for. CIS subcontractor automation and a named accountant come as standard.

  • MTD ITSA ready for April 2026
  • Named accountant on the phone
  • Joy Pilot software included free
  • CIS automation at no extra cost

Why Sole Traders Choose No Worries

MTD ITSA goes live on 6 April 2026. Five HMRC submissions a year instead of one. We handle the lot — for one transparent monthly fee.

Joy Pilot included, free

MTD-ready software with Jodie AI, voice invoicing, Open Banking, receipt capture and multi-currency. Retail price on comparable software is £15–£30/month. Yours free.

A real accountant on the phone

Not a chat bot. Not an offshore first line. Every client gets dedicated expert support from a team that understands small business finance — people who review your filings and pick up the phone.

MTD from the firm that filed the first one

Joy Pilot filed the UK’s first live MTD VAT return in June 2018. MTD ITSA isn’t something we’re gearing up for — it’s what Joy Pilot was built for.

CIS automation for construction subbies

Joy Pilot pulls HMRC’s record of every CIS deduction reported against your UTR, matches it to your statements, and flows your YTD refund straight into your Self Assessment. Included in every tier.

Own your bank, own your money

Unlike some self-employed fintechs, we don’t ask you to move your money into a branded account. Stay with your bank. Joy Pilot connects via Open Banking — you stay in control.

Clear pricing. No surprises.

£29, £59 or £89 a month. No per-call charges. No exit fees. Cancel with 30 days’ notice.

How It Works

From sign-up to final declaration — no guesswork.

Sole trader professional at work
1

Onboard & get set up

Sign up, meet your accountant on a kickoff call. We give you guidance on HMRC sole-trader registration (you register yourself with HMRC), then handle MTD ITSA sign-up on your behalf. Joy Pilot is live from day one, bank feed connected, receipt capture ready.

2

Run your books each quarter

Invoice clients, snap receipts, ask Jodie AI anything about your numbers. Ten days before each MTD deadline we review your data, flag anything missing, and give you a short list to action before we file.

3

We file. You approve.

Four quarterly updates plus your final declaration, all prepared by your named accountant and sent for digital sign-off before they hit HMRC. CIS refunds flow automatically into the return. VAT handled too, if you add it.

Sole Trader or Limited Company?

For many people, starting as a sole trader is the simplest route. As your business grows, you may want to consider whether a limited company would suit you better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from sole traders considering No Worries.

Each threshold is tested against a specific Self Assessment return. If your combined gross self-employment and property income is over £50,000 on your 2024/25 return — yes, from 6 April 2026. The £30,000 threshold is tested against your 2025/26 return (enrolment by April 2027); the £20,000 threshold against your 2026/27 return (enrolment by April 2028). Our Essentials tier is for sole traders under the threshold; MTD Ready and Full Service cover anyone in scope.
Nothing extra. Joy Pilot is our MTD-ready accounting software and is included free for every No Worries sole trader client. Competitors typically charge £15–£30/month on top of their accountant fee for FreeAgent, Xero or QuickBooks.
Yes, in every tier at no extra cost. Joy Pilot automatically pulls HMRC’s record of what your contractors have reported against your UTR, matches it to the deduction statements you upload, flags anything that doesn’t tie up, and flows your year-to-date CIS suffered figure straight into your Self Assessment. On MTD Ready and above we’ll submit your corrected figures to HMRC if a contractor has under-reported.
HMRC runs a points-based penalty regime. Four missed quarterly deadlines in a rolling 24 months trigger a £200 penalty. A soft-landing concession waives first-year points for 2026/27, though late-payment penalties still apply. On MTD Ready and Full Service we pre-review your data ten days before each deadline and chase anything missing.
Add the VAT add-on: £25/month for all four quarterly MTD VAT returns, plus scheme-selection advice (Flat Rate, Standard, Cash Accounting). Registration is a one-off £75, waived on Full Service. We also handle the domestic reverse charge that applies to CIS-registered construction work.
Yes if you have rental income. HMRC treats your property business as a separate income source with its own Business ID, so Joy Pilot gives it its own workspace with its own bank feed. The £15/month add-on covers up to five UK properties, the combined property quarterly update, Section 24 mortgage-interest-relief handling, and rent-a-room / PRR guidance.
Yes. Upgrades apply from the following month. Downgrades apply from the following month at the earliest, but we’ll flag it if the downgrade would mean you’re not MTD-compliant. No exit fees either way.
We don’t hold your money. Unlike some self-employed fintechs that give you a branded bank account, you bank with whoever you already bank with. Joy Pilot connects to your account via Open Banking (regulated and read-only). Your cash stays with an FSCS-protected bank.
We’re a contractor accountancy firm first, so stepping up to our limited-company service is a natural next step. We’ll migrate your Joy Pilot data, handle the incorporation, and keep the same named accountant where possible.
